New drive unit The drive inside Stealth is one-sided and still uses the company's "core V-Planar" technology. However, it is almost 20% larger than the previous version with 50x76 mm compared to 45x71 mm for the 3rd generation found inside Ether 2 and Ether C Flow. AMTS or A coustical M etamaterial T uning S ystem Stealth has also included a new system placed between the drive unit and the ear called the AMTS or Acoustical Metamaterial Tuning System. In some ways, this is perhaps the most innovative aspect of Stealth design. This unassuming "honeycombed wedge" is primarily designed to manipulate how the sound waves spread in the headphone cups and the diffusion control from the drive to the ear, which leads to a more natural and immersive sound image, even though it is a closed headphone. A secondary function of the AMTS is that when configured correctly it can dual as a programmable Helmholtz or quarter-wave resonator to control high frequency standing waves and resonance via the ‘ramped’ shaped design starting at 8kHz at the peak of the ramp down to 20kHz at the base of the ramp. Few do the and few do them well with the resulting niche category being subsequently applied. The Stealth breaks that mold and then some. However, it is just not the technical innovation inside the Stealth to create one of the most open-sounding closed-back but also the tuning makes it one of the most accessible. The detail is very much there but it is delivered in a very natural manner that makes this a very enjoyable listen. Given how hard it is to tune closed backs to get an accurate and pleasing tonal character that should be taken as a bit of a home run from the DCA team. Also, the aesthetics are great, the materials used are thoughtful and the comfort/isolation is excellent. You do need a quality amplifier to get the most out of the Stealth but I suspect those who are willing to shell out 4G’s for it will already have something a bit special to pair with it. Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS) All headphones are subject to high-frequency standing waves which can make treble sound harsh, fatiguing, or synthetic. AMTS is a patent pending inline device placed between the transducer and ear. It integrates waveguides, diffusion control, quarter-wave, and Helmholtz resonators into one compact structure. Diffusion reduces some standing wave formation while resonators act as both precision and broad filters to smooth and shape the frequency response, smoothing the sound from the midrange through the highest frequencies.
