Kiwi Ears Atheia is a headphone that combines two different types of drivers – a 50 mm dynamic driver and a 14.5 mm planar magnetic driver. This combination is unusual and is used here to take advantage of the strengths of both technologies: the dynamic driver's ability to reproduce energy and pressure in the lower frequencies, together with the planar magnetic technology's speed and detail in the midrange and treble.
The sound image is tuned to be neutral and balanced, with a clear but controlled bass, natural midrange and a treble that stands out without being harsh. The frequency range extends from 20 Hz up to 40 kHz, which provides space for both depth and openness in the sound. Distortion is kept at a low level even at higher volumes, which means that detail is preserved regardless of listening level.
The construction is also well thought out in the choice of materials. The ear cups are made of walnut wood, which gives a warm and natural feel. "I’m quite impressed with the Atheia. It boasts excellent build quality and comfort, and its hybrid driver delivers great technical performance for the price. With the stock pads, the Atheia has a smooth, slightly dark, and somewhat bass-heavy sound signature while still maintaining good detail.
However, after switching to the partly fenestrated hybrid Brainwavz pads, the sound signature transformed—becoming much more neutral with a vast soundstage, fully showcasing the capabilities of the Atheia's driver setup.
As Kiwi Ears' first high-end headphone, the Atheia has a lot to offer—especially with the right pad swap. And again, its build quality is nothing short of superb."
