Its origins come from the Caldera Open (Headfonics Best Ortho 2023 - the Closed used the now-patented Atrium Damping System and the patent-pending Caldera Pad and Caldera Magnet Systems). Caldera is a type of massive volcano - ZMF uses the Volcano theme because the new CAMS (Caldera Asymmetrical Magnet Structure), with a patent-pending magnet structure, is shaped like a volcano/mountain on one side. This shape allows air to disperse naturally and maintains a slightly asymmetric magnetic force that makes the diaphragm more nodal, which causes it to push a huge amount of air towards the ear while spreading it well. Coupled with the patent-pending Atrium damping system, which is also used on the Caldera, you get a linear frequency response, with the huge punch, weight and natural tones that ZMF is so well known for. Apart from the new technology, a new ear pad design has been creayed for the Caldera, (so-called "Caldera Pads"), which has a "fluting" from a smaller size at the driver to a larger size at the ear. The shape of the pads is similar to the Audeze pads on the LCD 5, but they are "flatter" at the ear (like a volcano). This cushion shape allows the sound to maintain air pressure on the baffle/headphone side and still makes the ear feel very open/natural. ZMF has a number of different versions of these cushions. Sonically, the closed version conveys the speed, immediacy and dynamics of the Caldera Open, while adding a boost to the sub-bass. Furthermore, its tuning is closer to the Harman tuning with the incredible sound isolation of a closed headphone. Aesthetically, the Caldera Closed uses a geometric 'Caldera Volcano' influenced case shape for the first time, with asymmetrical pits/waves that allow the sonic character of the driver to shine. A unique shape that feels great in the hand and much lighter on the head than you could ever imagine.
